Happy New Year to you, your family and colleagues!
As we usher in 2024 with fresh resolutions and renewed vigor, I want to share a personal journey that echoes our collective pursuit of health and wellness. It’s about overcoming the allure of perfection to embrace consistent progress.
Back in 2021, with the world pivoting amidst the pandemic, I brought a Nordictrack elliptical into my home, substituting the gym with the safety and comfort of personal space. The biting cold of winter no longer deterred my fitness routine. Yet, despite these adjustments, I found myself entangled in a quest for the perfect workout schedule.
In 2022, amidst founding Ayur Integrative Medicine and leaving my routine job, I set a seemingly feasible goal: thrice-weekly, 30-minute workouts. However, the rigid structure of specific days turned into a cycle of postponements and excuses. Work and unexpected commitments often derailed my Monday, Wednesday, and Friday plan, leading to limited workouts based on an erratic schedule. The pursuit of the perfect routine led to inconsistent execution. The year’s end revealed a stark reality – only 63 workouts completed.
Realizing the need for a change, 2023 brought a new approach: a daily commitment to step onto the elliptical. This strategy wasn’t about clocking in a fixed time or intensity but about showing up every day. Surprisingly, removing the pressure of “perfect” sessions led to more consistent and enjoyable workouts. By year’s end, I tallied 173 workouts. Though short of the ambitious 200, the progress was undeniable.
The lesson was clear and profound: consistency outshines sporadic perfection. The daily, flexible approach not only yielded more workouts but also integrated exercise seamlessly into my life, making it a natural, enjoyable part of my daily routine.
For 2024, I am committed to continuing this journey with a flexible, yet consistent approach. My aim is 200 workouts, with the understanding that some days might be shorter or less intense than others. The focus is on showing up for myself every day, regardless of the duration or intensity of the workout.
I invite each of you to join me in redefining our health goals. Let’s shift from seeking the perfect schedule to building a consistent, adaptable routine. Let’s celebrate every step, every day, as a victory towards our health. Remember, in the pursuit of wellbeing, “perfect is the enemy of progress.”
Here’s to a year of health, adaptability, and growth.
