I recently had an incredible experience at Menlo-Atherton High School, where I shared my passion for food, nutrition, and their profound impact on health and wellness. It was a delight to demonstrate how to whip up a nutritious and delicious smoothie. The response was phenomenal- enthusiastic students lined up for seconds!
In this edition, we delve into the world of phytonutrients, these incredible compounds in our smoothies and foods that contribute to our health.
Phytonutrients, including flavonoids, carotenoids, lignans, and glucosinolates, are nature’s gifts to our health, playing key roles in reducing inflammation, enhancing immunity, and much more.
Power-Packed Ingredients of Our Smoothies
Fruits: Bananas are our natural sweeteners, imparting a creamy texture. Berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, rich in flavonoids, are best organic to minimize pesticide exposure. Don’t forget the hydrating watermelon, fiber-rich apple, vitamin-packed orange, and tropical favorites like pineapple and papaya.
Vegetables: Adding vegetables to smoothies might seem unusual, but they are nutritional powerhouses. Carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and celery provide essential nutrients without overpowering the smoothie’s taste. Carrots are especially noteworthy for their beta-carotene content.
Greens: Spinach and kale are the superstars of any health-conscious diet, packed with nutrients and phytonutrients, including lignans. They blend seamlessly into smoothies, adding nutrients and a beautiful green hue.
Seeds and Nuts: Chia and flax seeds are excellent thickeners and sources of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Nuts like almonds and walnuts enhance the texture and contribute healthy fats and proteins.
Spices: Spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom not only add intriguing flavors but also bring their health benefits, like anti-inflammatory properties.
Protein Option: For an extra protein boost, particularly post-workout or as a meal replacement, a scoop of plant-based protein powder is a great addition.
